Two days later he made an appointment to see Loxley.

What the hell will I say to him? he thought, as he burned his dinner that evening. I can’t just go up to him and say, Loxley, I don’t want to teach that new third elective next semester; I’d prefer to have a spare period. Jesus. No. Have to bargain.

And the Vaulting Vista he’d had at Cheryl’s. Well it just wasn’t quite as clear as he’d have liked it to have been. Unable to interpret it for himself, he’d even asked Cheryl what she thought it might mean; he felt she might have a knack for such things, since it worked so well for her.

She’d said it meant that Loxley must be from another planet, and if Prentice would just show no fear, bluff him about exposing him, then he’d end up controlling the planet along with Loxley and others of his ilk, all of whom were obviously aliens. It explained much, she’d told him; there were even rumours among the Students that such was the case, and she’d found his Vista particularly exciting.

He wasn’t so sure. Perhaps his pill had been prematurely damp.…
